IP Valuation for Patent Trading
The client, a former investment banker, invited us to provide input on the business model and approach to IP valuation for a financial exchange that was eager to trade patents in a way similar to that of the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX).
Our Approach
We contributed to outlining the mechanisms for a formal exchange for obtaining revenue from the licensing of patents to manufacturers and financial participants via the introduction of non- exclusive patent licenses. The key tenets of an exchange for intellectual property rights (IPRs) and the mechanisms it deploys to overcome market limitations to stimulate the liquid exchange of IP rights were assessed.
