Director of Patent Mediation and Arbitration Centre Aleš Zalar

Aleš Zalar is a former Minister of Justice and Acting Minister of Home Affairs of Slovenia. During the last 12 years he served as president of the European Centre for Dispute Resolution (ECDR), mediator, arbitrator and as independent consultant in international rule of law reforms and dispute system design projects.
He was also the president of the District Court of Ljubljana as well as president of the Slovenian Judges Association.
He also served as the chair of the Advisory group of Experts in Ukraine, which selects candidates for judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. For more than 15 years he occasionally assisted Ukraine in development of ADR (alternative dispute resolution) system, constitutional reform and since the establishment of the High Anti-corruption Court of Ukraine he also supported its operation as senior legal adviser.
He is a member of various international institutions, inter alia, Mediation Centre Stakeholders Network of the EUIPO, International Institute for Justice Excellence, and of Council of the European Law Institute (ELI). As policy adviser, trainer and lecturer he has been engaged in more than 30 countries worldwide.
For his contribution to development of mediation he received many special recognitions and awards, including from the Council of Europe (Crystal Scale of Justice) and from the US State Department (International Visitor Leadership Gold Star).
Find Out How to Become an Accredited Mediator with the PMAC
Participants will learn how to become an accredited mediator and/or arbitrator at the Patent Mediation and Arbitration Centre (PMAC) of the Unified Patent Court (UPC), what kind of incentives to consider in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and what type of support will be offered by the UPC and the PMAC.
Mr. Zalar will also explain how to obtain free of charge assistance at selecting appropriate dispute resolution proceedings at the PMAC and discuss what the competitive advantages of the PMAC’s services are compared to other institutional providers of ADR. This talk will furthermore look at how to enforce mediated settlements and arbitral awards, reached at the PMAC and more.
By background, the newly created Patent Mediation and Arbitration Centre (PMAC) of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) is a specialized institution that aims to resolve patent disputes through mediation, arbitration and other appropriate dispute resolution processes. The PMAC is an integral part of the Unified Patent Court, with its governance and finances embedded within the UPC’s overall structure. The PMAC operates with two seats in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and Lisbon, Portugal.
